If you have Big Lots store in your area…u may try there. You may also look for your local goodwill, you would be surprised what you might find.

Use Craigslist. It’s basically a site of classfied ads grouped by city, most transactions are local pickup only. There’s a lot of stuff on there for great prices, you can get a lot of nice stuff for under $100. I’m moving into an apartment next month and have gotten some very nice stuff off of it. I picked up a very good, large computer desk for $50 and a queen mattress/box spring for I think $100.
There’s also a free section where you can get some legitimately good deals – I got a nice black entertainment center with glass doors and a CD tower for free, it holds up to a 42″ TV. I had to move it out of a town house almost by myself but it was well worth it – about 20 minutes of struggling, frustration, and saying “hell I don’t know if it’ll fit through here” resulted in me getting a very nice piece of furniture.
It’s a great site and you get some great prices.
In addition, you can try places like Goodwill and the Salvation Army. There’s a place here called the Crisis Center that has some great stuff for extremely cheap.

I will give you a warning before you start
looking. Some furniture comes with it’s own
pets. You don’t see them but you sure feel
them when you’re sleeping. They are called
Bed Bugs.
Also cockroaches travel to their new homes
and body lice and assorted body fluids that
have seeped into the mattress or couch.
Be very careful when you buy and use your
nose a lot.
Check http://www.losangelesfurnitureonline.com/, they have lots of great design and low price furnitures.
