Question by Proud Mommy!: Is it medically necessary to warm a newborn or infant’s formula?
i had my son august 2007. it was a very warm summer. about 50% of the time i did not warm up his formula before giving it to him. he liked the cold milk as much as he liked the warm milk. people made such a big deal about me giving him cold milk. he never had any gas, spitting up or problems going to the bathroom. is it medically necessary to warm a newborn or infant’s formula? i’m expecting my second child soon.

i dont think so, i just think its more comfortable for them… what they are used to, you know? think about how warm they were in your belly.
and perhaps it settles easier? I did the same with my daughter though. She was ok with it warm or room temp. She didnt care and it didnt hurt her belly either. Do what works for your baby.
What do you think? Answer below!

im not sure, but i know they say to warm it up so they arent gasy so if it didnt hurt ur first then ur second SHOULD be ok, but u just gotta try and see.
no, but in NATURE he would NEVER drink cold milk! So it’s not at all natural for him to drink it cold! Sounds like laziness on your part is all!
yes in the fact that it will not make him cold and causes less gas…good for you that your son was okay but its not always that way.
Not medically necessary. Most babies like it warmed up better, but I think it is more of a preference thing more than anything else.
My mother in-law made was really upset when I gave my first child cold breast milk. So much that I started to always warm it up. And that can be a real pain sometimes. I should have listened to my intuition and just keep it cold. It would have made my life easier.
there is no proof babies prefer warm formula… I know that much.
there is no medical reason to warm the milk. most people do, because if the baby is breastfed the milk is body tempurature. my pediatrician says not to give cold milk, but room temperature is just fine, and it’s a lot more convenient when you’re not at home and have to feed the baby.
I dont think so. My son when he started formula @ 4 months preferred it to be room temp. Never liked to cold or warm. Actually his dr gave him a bottle in the office ( we had weight gain issues) and he wanted to see how he took it in the office and he gave it to him room temp.
It didn’t matter in the summer, but lets think about it. Do you want ice cold milk in the Winter time? A poor little baby cannot tell you that the milk is giving them brain freeze. Then lets look at what formula is suppose to be. Breastmilk Does the milk come out of your breasts ice or refrigerator cold? Does warm milk put a baby to sleep better and faster than cold and room temperature milk? That is why they SUGGEST that you warm the baby’s milk before giving it to them. If the baby drinks it cold and has no problems-more power to you.
Sounds like you’re going down the right path…..doing what your ‘motherly instincts’ tell you to do…..:)
Since your first one was born in August ( a hot month)…then the cold milk worked…however, if you have one born in the winter months…perhaps you should try warming the milk a bit…..
I never warmed up my daughter’s formula. She always got room temperature water from a filtered pitcher. She was breastfed the first four months.
It’s not medically necessary no. It’s just easier on their tummies to have their formula warm.
i stopped warming my son’s formula at about a month, he didn’t like it, he prefered cold and he was fine with it. I did tall his pediatrician and they advised as long as he was not getting cramps form the cold milk it was fine…
