Question by Lacie: organic baby mattress why are they better?
ive read someone put they reduced the SIDS chance because normal mattress’s have been treated with chemicals that the baby inhale and its bad for them, i cant find any articles though. is this true?

That’s what I’ve heard, and it does make sense to me… but I haven’t read any research on the subject, either.

I have heard that too — while fumes on a mattress might be a contributing factor, I think that during autopsies, they’d be able to see that the body had some sort of poisonous substance breathed in. and if that were true, they’d just make all organic mattresses and they’d be mandated and SIDS would go away. it’s not the case. the risk of SIDS is very, very low but it is scary to think about. I do know that you should always buy a new mattress for a baby but I’d be wary of spending a lot of money on an organic one, just because it might be a marketing scam. I’m pretty hippie myself, but if your baby is sleeping on organic cotton it’s not going to reduce SIDS, in my opinion. it’s just going to cost you a lot more money.
just make sure you get a firm mattress so they don’t sink into it. our son has a serta one in his crib, but we co-sleep anyways.
