Where did you get your baby furniture?

Question by kckli: Where did you get your baby furniture?
I’ve been browsing various websites for baby furniture (not pregnant yet but hopefully soon). The reviews on some of the produtcs are helpful, but limited.

Where did you buy your furniture (crib, changing table, accessories, etc)? were there things you wish you had done differently, or wish you had known ahead of time? Things you shouldn’t have wasted money on? Absolute nursery essentials?

I hate to spend too much on a furniture they’ll quickly outgrow, but obviously want good quality pieces.

Thanks!

Get the book Baby Bargains out of the library- it is a tall skinny book. A new edition is published every year. They rate all the companies for cribs/furniture, and all other baby equipment. This book also shows you that the most expensive is not always the best quality- just look at all the recent recalls on the expensive Wendy Bellisamo cribs ar Babies R Us. Good luck!

We got the Storkcraft Aspen crib, dresser and changing table from Walmart. They had the same set at Babies R’ Us & Target, but Walmart had it for less.
We do NOT recommend this set. The wood is flimsy & the pieces never fit together properly.

My suggestion would be to buy a quality new crib & then thrift shop for a dresser and changing table that you could put your own creative touch on.

seriously you can get good baby furniture from your local walmart. you really need the crib, mattress and sheets. as far as changing table goes, i didn’t use one, i always just layed down a changing pad where ever i was and changed him there, cheaper and easier. i wouldn’t invest alot of money into decorations and furniture. they grow up so fast and besides by the time they are 2 almost 3 they will have started to develop likes and dislikes of there own. my son really loves spiderman and he’s 2 1/2, so we are decorating his room with those spiderman wall stick ups. they are cheap and they don’t ruin the walls.
other things to keep in mind would be those diaper genie things, i found that to be a complete waste of money. i didn’t have the time to mess with it, i didn’t have the money to contiuously buy the bags for it, it was just easier to walk the diaper outside to the trash.
    anyway good luck
oh and you can always go to a used baby store they are very picky about what they accept when they buy furniture and it’s cheaper than buying it new but looks nice.

I got mine at furniture at Walmart and it’s great! (the changing table we got is also a dresser) Great deal and it can be used for years;)
I actually got the crib we are using from a house sale we just got a new mattress for it and we are good to go. Why spend a ton of $ on a crib when they are only in it for less than 2 years.
Wishing you all the best of luck!

Ikea and Target. You really don’t need a changing table. We just bought waterproof changing pads and changed our son on the bed or on the floor. Also, a diaper genie is something you will stop using after a month or two. We have really forgotten all about ours and just use the trashcan. Things you will love having are a swing and a rocking chair (or something that rocks). Also, my son would not sleep in a crib until almost 3 months and would only sleep in a bassinet so, have one of those, of course. We also bought some things at Babies R Us, but we basically shopped wherever ppl bought us gift cards. Be sure to add those to your baby registery or tell ppl you want them. They are very useful even after the baby comes.

    Absolute nursery essentials?

Nothing. The only thing is a safe capsule to carry baby in the car and a car seat when they get bigger.

The only thing a baby wants is to be close to it’s parents, especially the one with the built in milk, you really don’t need any of the other stuff.

I bought my crib at a garage sale in an upper class neighborhood. Both dressers came from Ashley Furniture, they are pieces of an adult bedroom set which match our crib. I decided to buy adult dressers because I too didn’t want to spend a ton of money and she can use these forever. I didn’t buy a changing table since I didn’t think it was necessary. Our bassinet was purchased by friends of mine from Baby’s R Us.

I bought a toddler bed off of a co-worker of mine.

We purchased the 3 in 1 Madison crib, changing table and armoire from Babies R Us. It is made with real wood (not particle board). We love it! The changing table we used until our baby was about 6 months old but now she moves so much we just do it on the floor.

We actually saw the exact crib we bought on Craigslist in excellent condition for half the price so with the next baby we are probably going to shop around for used furniture.

The one thing that I very happy that we did was we bought a crib that turns into a toddler bed and then into a full size bed. We just had our second baby 6 months ago and we just converted it back into a crib from a full size bed that our four year old daughter was sleeping in and got our four year old new furniture.

I was lucky enough to have it given to me. My mom still had hers from me and my younger siblings, and she keeps all her stuff in exellent condition. She let me use the bassinet she had, as well as a crib and dresser/changing table she got with one of my younger siblings. All of the accessories (sheets, blankets, etc.) I got at Walmart.

We had our crib and changing table given to us by my mom. We use the changing table for a dresser since it’s easier for me to just change him on the floor. I’m kinda short and it’s just awkward for me. We bought the bouncy seat, swing, and everything else at either Wal-Mart or Target. I wish we wouldn’t have wasted the money on a Diaper Genie. They are worthless and stink. I wish we would’ve gotten a swing that can be plugged into the wall. The battery powered one we have drains batteries so often and really doesn’t swing well. Make sure you have lots of crib sheets. We were glad we bought lots of socks and bibs. Buy a little mesh bag to keep all the little stuff in (like socks) so you don’t lose them to the Washer God. The bassinett was pretty much not used at all and now has toys in it til we put it in storage. You can get good stuff out of the newspaper too.
