Question by Momuvtwinboyzn1babygirl: Do you sterilize your bottle nipples, caps and rings? And do you boil your tap water when making baby formula?
I did all of that when I had my boys 9 years ago but use the dishwasher for all of my newborns bottles, caps, rings and nipples. I also do not boil the water for her formula like I did with my boys. I use the hottest tap water when making bottles for the next day and use warm tap water when making a bottle one at a time. Is that bad? Should I be boiling all the water or using nursery water? Or is the tap water just fine?

I just boil the bottles and everything once, when I take it out of the box. After that I use the dishwasher and only been using warm tap water.

I only boil the bottles when taking them out of the box. And I use the dishwasher for my sons bottles as well.
She’s lived this long. I’m sure the tap water is fine.
I hand wash the bottles and caps in hot water. We don’t have a dishwasher. I boil the nipples and use luke warm tap water for the bottles. I was told by my pediatrician all of this is fine. If I had a dishwasher, I would be using that to wash everything….someday. I think of a dishwasher in my future fondly….
I use the dishwasher for my bottles too.
I boiled the bottles, nipples, etc. when I first got them. Especially now with all they are finding I think this is necessary. As far as making the formula I bought a britta filter that Hooked up to my faucet. This was the best investment we made. This way the water is clean and you can get the temp you want to make your bottles!! Congrats and good luck
I boil sterilized my sons nipples, bottles, rings, and caps, and used boiled tap water when making formula.
But now that he is 6 months, I just wash the bottle and all it’s accessories, and use the hottest tap water.
I only boiled the bottles and nipples once after taking them out of the box, after that I just washed them with water, dish soap and a bottle brush.
Yes I use cold tap water to make bottles.
FYI, you should NOT use hot or warm tap water to make bottles though (I mean the water you are mixing with the formula) or in your cooking either. Hot water going through the tap has a higher concentration of lead, you should always use COLD tap water to make bottles (and for cooking, drinking, etc).
Here’s a link from the EPA that explains:

I was using nursery water when he was on powdered formula…now that he’s on ready to feed formula and i have a whole slew of nursery water left over I’m using it for when I give him juice…and i do still sterilize his bottles, rings, and nipples…I just have a steam sterilizer since I got tired of boiling everything…
I’ve heard that putting the bottles in the dishwasher will sterilize them. I prefer not to put them in the dishwasher so I bought a baby bottle sterilizer.
As far as the tap water goes, I guess it depends on what the tap water is like in your area. The tap water where we live sucks, in fact our city recommends that pregnant woman not drink it. So I use bottled water.
I boiled them all before the first time I used them. Sometimes I use the dishwasher but most of the time I just hand wash his bottles.
We have well water and it has lots of sand in it so we just use bottled water. The baby sitter used warm tap water so I figure he gets his Fluoride there.
I sterilized the nipples in boiling water, but the rings and bottles themselves went in the dishwasher.
I used normal hot water from the tap when making bottles for him to drink and he is fine. I will be doing the same thing for my daughter when she arrives in Feb.
It is good to sterilize all bottle parts at least once or twice a week, but you don’t have to boil them every time you wash them. The dishwasher’s steam dry cycle does good enough.
I’m a new mum, he’s was 10 weeks yesterday, and I boil filtered tap water mainly due to the tap water being full of limescale where I live. I also use a steam steriliser on the bottles after washing them out.
I sterilized them when I first got them. I hand wash my bottles, nipples, and caps, in hot, hot, soapy water. I use room temperature nursery water when I make bottles for my baby, but thats because I have well water and the filtered water that comes out of my fridge is only cold. My baby seems happy and healthy so I stick with it.
I sterilized everything once after buying the bottles. Then every other time after I just wash in Hot Hot tap water and soap. I do not hav ea dishwasher so this is what I have to do. My son is fine from it. I hear that tap water etc is fine if your water source is ok to use. Our water source my husband and I don’t enough drink and I don’t use it for my sons bottles. We get drinking water that has been purified and carbon filtered at Kroger’s for 89 cents. It is only used for his bottles so it lasts a good while.
I sterilized all my son’s bottle stuff at the beginning til he was about 6 months… then I just started doing it in our dishwasher. Since we have well water, and boiling is just one more thing I don’t have time for… we’ve used nursery water with our son (especially since our tap water doesn’t have fluoride in it). My SIL down the street has the same water as me and uses it (room temp & unboiled) with her two children and they’re fine
I just sick all the bottles stuff in the dishwasher or wash it by hand if i need it ASAP. I used to use tap water for a few weeks wheni ran out of distiled water like at the end of the gallon before i got to go to the store and buy more. BUt now i use nersury water all the time because the tap water at out new place taset like Chlorine.
Omg you dont boil your babys water to mix it with the formula not even a filter, that it very very bad. Hot tap water has more lead than cold water and it has fluoride which is bad to swallow for the baby. DOnt use hot tap water, and if you dont want to boil it at least use a filter. Boil the babys water until they are 6months or older and then use filtered water.
I used to boil her bottles and nipples until i found out i can use the dishwasher to wash them, so i dishwash the bottles and nipples.
I boiled the bottles when I first bought them, but after that, nope. Dishwasher was all I used. Also, I never boiled water for formula. I just used warm tap water. Seriously, if your house doesn’t have copper pipes, and you use city water, then your tap water is just fine.
It’s crazy that some parents boil their bottles every time and boil water for every bottle.
Edit: As for the higher concentration for lead in hot tap water, that’s more because of the water sitting in the taps waiting to be used, rather than the actual temperature. I read that when using the hot tap water, just let it run two minutes or so before using it…which is about how long it takes for my water to turn warm anyway…LOL
