Can you overdose your baby with Iron Fortified formula?

Question by peanutstarshine: Can you overdose your baby with Iron Fortified formula?
I know you are supposed to follow directions carefully with vitamins because of iron, so is it the same with baby formula?

My cousin had her baby one week before I had mine (2 months ago). I just found out that in order to get him to sleep better, she gives him one scoop to every ounce of water she uses (when the directions say one scoop to every two ounces of water).

Could that harm the baby in any way?

It can cause bad constipation, and even a small amount of excess iron can damage heart and brain and other storage sites in the body and lead to heart attack or stroke.

um yea that could severly dehydrate him.. though most formula is 1 scoop to one ounce.

Yes that could harm the baby!!

“Putting too much powder into formula can be just as dangerous, causing sodium levels to rise and potentially triggering seizures.”

MOST formula is not one scopp to one ounce. i don’t use the stuff and i even know that. formula is usually one scoop per two ounces of water. and it can mess his electrolytes off and dehydrate him. that’s lazy and negligent parenting

This can hurt your baby’s kidneys. It is EXTREMELY important that we follow the formula’s directions!

  5. Bunniculette says:

formula directions are to be followed to the letter! this could be dangerous to the child. however i am sure she would be upset if you approached her in a scolding manner BUT you should def mention your concern. be coy about it and say you ran across an article and was so worried about the baby you had to tell her about it. then tell her to ask her pediatrician about it. they will let her know that this is for sure a very bad idea and must stop asap.
