A few thoughts about Carver Anne Mason, age 1.

She likes a chopped up banana for breakfast. She like hummus or avocado or pieces of mild cheddar for lunch. And she REALLY loves organic puffs. Any time. She’s not so big into pureed veggies; never has been. She’s still breastfeeding for the bulk of her nutrition. So far, she’s a vegetarian. She has recently come to love her stuffed animals. She’s especially fond of Teddy, Brownie, Dolly, and Heidi (in that order). She can stand up without using her arms to pull herself up. She’s a fast crawler, but her favorite mode of transport lately is holding onto two fingers (preferably her mom’s or dad’s) and pulling us while she leans into a very determined walk. She likes to walk using her dinosaur, but if he’s not around, she’ll sometimes push her high chair around as if that’s a walker. She has pulled herself up onto the stairs twice, but she hasn’t got the hang of getting back down. She’s changing up her naptimes. She used to be a two nap kind of gal with a 9pm bedtime. Now, she sometimes takes one nap and is asleep at night by 8pm. She still wakes up once (or more) a night. Her dad comforts her back to sleep. People regularly comment on how focused she is on objects and other people. She loves being around kids and babies. She can even tolerate other adults if it’s totally obvious that they are parents to young children. She’s not especially cuddly, but she gives kisses (slimy, open mouth on the cheek) and hugs with pats on the back. She has just about outgrown her size 12 month clothes, but she’s still swimming in her size 18 month clothes. She likes her stacking cups but not so much her stacking rings. She loves being outside. She still grins when she sees the Bjorn, though she has nearly outgrown it (both for her comfort and for ours). She seems to like her new car seat that we just installed last week. It’s still rear-facing, but it sits up higher and gives her more to look at. Until very recently, we all went on a nightly walk after dinner, and she loved that. It’s too dark too early now. She’s had very limited screen time (virtually no TV because her parents don’t watch anything until after she has gone to bed)… but she gets upset if we’re ignoring her in favor of our phones (and sitting in front of a full-on computer screen is out of the question). She can put the round shape into her shape sorter. She cheats with the rest of the shapes and just puts them into the openings on the ends of the sorter. She likes turning the pages of board books, and she likes listening to books that are sing-song or rhyming. She has a thing for taking bookmarks out of books. One of her favorite play areas is the bedroom dresser. She’ll open the drawers and pull things out and put things in for long stretches of time. She loves cables and cords. (She is clearly her father’s daughter, as I am cable-averse.) She says, "Mumum" and, "Dada." She calls out, "Teddy" for most of her stuffed animals. She recognizes cats when we’re outside walking around and she’ll call out something that sounds like, "Kitty!" She claps her hands (similar to the sign language gesture for more) when she wants more food or water. When we say, "Use gentle hands," she smacks herself in the head. Changing her diaper these days is a serious pain because she has a slew of evasive tactics that she uses to get away. The first (and so far, only) body part that she has learned is her belly. She has two bottom teeth. She has her two top front teeth plus a couple more coming out on either side of those. She’s not such a fan of taking a bath. Yet. And, as of tonight, she unofficially weighs in at about 22 pounds. Another unofficial count… the number of photos and videos taken of her by her mom and dad (as calculated by a glance at her dedicated iPhoto album)… in her first year of life is about… 9,800. (Is that number higher or lower than you expected?)

Most importantly… she is very much loved by her parents and family and friends.
