Preparing for pregnancy for a whole year?

Question by Anna: Preparing for pregnancy for a whole year?
my husband and i decided we would like to start trying. i would love to have a baby this year. i’m 22 yrs old and i heard the healthiest babies are born to mothers 17-22. so i dont want to leave it too late. especially as my husband is a bit older. anyway he’s a nutritonist and he gave me a list of things to do

1. I can’t eat any processed foods like chocolate / ice cream / cookies :’( , fast food, red meat, table sugar, salt, not allowed to drink coffee, alcohol
2. I have to eat a balanced diet of 8+ servings of organic fruits & veges, wholegrain cereals, milk, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds, fish twice a week (i hate fish), drink 8 glasses of water a day
3. Folic acid , multi vitamin, fish oil supplements
4. Light exercise 5 x a week ( I usually do this but sometimes I get lazy)
5. Meditate everyday and think positively (lol)

ive just summarized it , the actual thing is pages, anyway i have to do this for a whole year!

Do you think this is a bit over the top?

1 and 5 are a bit much. Everything is essentially common sense as it’s good to be healthy of course.

I never did 1 or 5 and I have two kids.

wow, i agree with #3 because it is apparently good to start on the folic acid and vitamins when trying to conceive…i never did any of these, im 20 and had a healthy baby boy and am now due to have my 2nd child in 6 weeks.

I think this summarised version is over the top. I’d hate to see the rest! LoL.

When i was pregnant, it was unplanned. I started taking pregnancy multivitamins as soon as i found out i was with baby, and i think that’s all i changed.
Deli meats, and foods that are pre packaged or prepared by someone that’s not you (or not in your kitchen) have a high risk of listeria, which can potentially harm you and your baby, so pack your lunch etc.
Soft cheeses are also a no no, as well as raw seafood, but that’s common sense.

With your exercise, just base it on normal light exercise. Once you “pop” when you’re pregnant, you can’t do crunches, or ab exercises, because you can damage them, but doing other exercises like walking, light weights, yoga etc is pretty good “pregnancy exercises”.

I think we should all think positive, pregnant or not, because stress is way too painful.

I also think you need to sit down with your hubby and work out a more convenient and “do’able” pre pregnancy plan. Something that you can actually achieve. If you try sticking to this, and wander off the road, it’ll end up making you feel bad and like you’ve failed him and yourself.

Good luck, i hope it all goes well!
Oh, and when you read pregnancy multi vitamins, they suggest a timeframe of when to start taking them ie 6 months before conception. I’d go by that with the rest of your plan too, if you want a bit more leniency.

oh my god!!! i hope you are joking???!!! what a control freak!!!!if he is like this now, what is he going to be like when your pregnant????!!!! or when he becomes a dad,,, over the top? its extreme!!
chill out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! life is for fun and love,,,and incidental THAT’S how to prepare for a baby,,and make one!
yes have a healthy lifestyle, eat well, exercise and be healthy,,,but there has to be some moderation. its also very important to relax and have fun,,,and this awfull book of “thou shalt not,,” is not fun or relaxing.
the only thing on the dictator’s list that is essential is folic acid.
by the way a woman’s fertility starts to decline from age 37.
you don’t have to eat fish if you don’t like it. and so what if you don’t feel like exercising 5 times a week or fancy a cookie and a burger occasionally.
if i were you i would nip this in the bud immediately,,,this controlling behaviour is not good or healthy. good luck and think very carefully before getting pregnant with a man like this. you are not his patient.

I think it’s a bit extreme, as long as you have a healthy diet, take the necessary supplements and generally look after yourself you will be fine.

Good luck hope you get your BFP soon x

Try yoga for fertility. The best yoga DVD for fertility is bend, breath, and conceive. This will help you greatly. I guarantee it that you will love it!

Just fyi, I’m a very healthy, spiritual person and naturally live similar to the guidelines you’ve layed out, and I’m still not pregnant after 13 months of ttc. My mom and sisters all smoked, drank, and ate horribly before their pregnancies and were overweight. Between the 3 of them, they have 8 kids. So, my point is, don’t worry about things like that. Be healthy for yourself, but you don’t have to be a nazi about it. It doesn’t make much difference. Good luck to you!

Yes! Over the top! And be REALLY careful about the fish oil. Some brands could contain mercury, You should tell him if you do it, he has to follow the same diet. ;-)

But serious, listen to what you doctor tells you, not your husband… I’m sure there are plenty of women out there who ate cookies and ice cream while pregnant and had perfectly healthy babies.
