Abbott Labs recalls Similac baby formula

The voluntary action affects less than 5 million Similac-brand powder formulas sold in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries. The company said the products may contain a small beetle or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems.

There’s another health safety concern in China over infant formula. Chinese health officials say they are investigating whether hormones in dairy products are causing baby girls to develop breasts. Three baby girls from China’s Hubei province have started to develop breasts—many, many years too early. They’re between just four and 15 months old. China’s Health Ministry says it’s investigating whether it’s because they’ve all been drinking a particular brand of milk formula. Tests showed that the babies’ hormone levels exceeded those of typical adult women, according to state-run China Daily. The babies’ parents have been advised by their doctors to stop using the milk formula. The formula is produced by Synutra, a NASDAQ-listed company based in eastern Shandong province. On Tuesday, China’s Health Ministry said it had asked Hubei food safety authorities to investigate the cases. Since the initial three cases, there have been scattered reports of other babies around the country showing signs of sexual prematurity. Those infants have all been taking Synutra products. The dairy manufacturer insists its infant formulas are safe, saying it does not add hormones to their products. Despite the reassurance, the company’s shares plunged by nearly 27% on Monday. It’s Synutra’s biggest fall since 2008, when a massive tainted milk scandal embroiled the Chinese dairy industry.

@flowertanovic yeah, but who really knows if Enfamil’s facilities WERE any better….I can tell you this, I bet Enfamil had a fire lit beneath them to go through their facilites very closely right after it all went down with Similac problem. That’s how industry works. Whether Enfamil is really better, we may never know, and they may have just gotten lucky. Either way, it’s a disgrace.

@IHateRozzyTV open pathways into the warehouses may be to blame. Open garage doors, open entrance doors, a common poor alternative for a cooling system to be installed in the warehouses…they will charge an arm and a leg for this stuff, but invest little in protecting their facilities and the babies who are drinking this stuff. This is just a thought, and a possibility, not necessarily the answer.

  3. misterdrum78 says:

This is unbelievable. The facilities where this stuff was produced should have been better inspected. I bet that the facilities has open pathways from open air that led into where this product was made. This is a major issue with many production plants, no matter what is made. Sometimes, you have plants that do not have ventilation to cool people during the summers, and garage doors/other doors are opened to cool down the warehouse. Big problem. Allows insects, rodents, birds to enter in!!

You’ll never see a recall on breastmilk!!!!
(And it is possible to lactate without ever having been pregnant, even men can lactate with the proper herbs and actions taken)

  5. vandykeification says:

Thanks for your comments about breast feeding. My son is adopted so I can’t breast feed. If you want to be hateful go somewhere else.

  6. flowertanovic says:

@virtusmagna We don’t breastfeed because we don’t want to, it’s because the milk stopped at 1 month and the only other option was to continue on formula!

  7. TylerNull says:

Perhaps president Hussein will nationalize them now.

  8. TheiPhoneH4CKER says:

Since I put my daughter (4 months) on Similac she’s been farting, :(

  9. virtusmagna says:

@flowertanovic If you want only the best you should breastfeed.

I took my baby to the doctor 3 times they changed her milk to another similac and they are recalled as well. A little stomach discomfort my ass. My baby had the runs one minute then constipated the next along with being fussy and the doctor has been trying to figure out why for 3 months now!! I have 3 cans on the recalled list according to the similac website. please take note!!! 85458rb, & 88195rb6. I am so pissed!!!! they just realized they had bugs come on!!!!

  17. flowertanovic says:

I’m done with similac! There is NO room for error when it come to “our” children! I expect only the best when I pay those prices!!! Shame on them cutting corners!!!

  18. brandonGCHACHU says:

I just opened a fresh can on Similac that WASNT on the recall list and found a mealworm in it! That tells me that it was probably old formula or been sitting in a warehouse forever before it was even packaged. Fuck Similac. My 5 year old was raised on Enfamil Lipil and it worked just fine and was cheaper.

  19. raficus2 says:

This is BS and I am writing my representative, Abbott and the major retailers knew about it because I’ve had the hardest time finding NeoSure (for premies) formula for the last 3 weeks. I actually had to try multiple cities in order to get a few cans. This past Monday a new can label/presentation was rolled out, ahead of the recall, how convenient !!!

  20. lilliana061880 says:

Lot #s 88164T20 and 88115T21 are being recalled too. They were bought from Target and other ones straight from the company.

  21. Tasiab23 says:

I have been try all morning too and nothing, Minnesota

  22. LinnieB says:

I cant even log onto the page through thier website to get the list of recalled formula. The similac.com/recall/lookup page is down! Nor can you get through on the phone, if it doesnt ring busy, a voice comes on telling you to call back because of high volume calls or go to the website, then hangs up on you! Where do they think i got the number to call?
very irresponsible fot Abbot to do a recall and not be preparred to handle the volume of customers concerned!

  23. lunarain19 says:

@virtusmagna It can cause digestive problems.
