Is it necessary to buy organic cotton sheets for a baby cot?

Question by Linda S: Is it necessary to buy organic cotton sheets for a baby cot?
Hi We have recently invested in organic mattresses for our two babies as we believe that the chemicals in normal mattresses maybe harmful to our babies. However, do we now need to buy organic cotton sheets or would the chemicals and pesticides in these sheets be washed out in a normal washing machine?

If you don’t want bleach and treating chemicals, they don’t just go away with washing, so if you’re into organic, get the organic ones/

I don’t think you need organic sheets. The term “organic” is a big rip off. The FDA is starting to crack down and set standards for what can be considered organic. For example the cotton sheets maybe organic because the cotton was grown organically but the dyes and starch contain loads of chemicals. Legally they can still call it “organic”. The same with food. A portion of the food maybe organic but not all of it. Read the label carefully. The mattress I understand because its made with a lot of man-made materials. They’ll be breathing in those chemicals and you can’t just throw it in the washer like sheets. Go for 100% / 90% cotton sheets and you should be fine.

As others have indicated, if you have made an investment in an organic mattress, you may as well go all the way with the sheets. Keep in mind you don’t have to spend a fortune for an organic crib sheet and you don’t need more than one or two. Target and Babies R Us carry them at reasonable prices. But if you have a boutique budget and want a special pattern then go for it.

The question about the authenticity of “organic” ends when you opt for USDA certified organic cotton sheets. If you live in the US, certified organics are NOT allowed to have chemicals. If you shop outside the US read the labels and certification standards carefully before purchasing.
