Budgeting for our baby…..Please help!?

Question by Clint: Budgeting for our baby…..Please help!?
Hi, My Husband and i are TTC in 4 months time, we both currently have full time jobs and together we bring in a fairly good wage. Were not rich or anything but we are not struggling either. We started a savings account about a year and a half ago which we will use that money for when im not working. My plans are to stay at home mum to raise our child until they are at least 2 years. I would love to stay home will he/she are in primary school but we will see how we are going at the time. So all of this time we will be living off 1 wage, paying the mortage, bills, ect with it. By the time the baby is born we will have a fairly good amount of money saved up for when i’m not working. What i am asking is:
1. We are putting away $ 390 per week which is $ 1,560 per month. Is that a good amount? Or sould i try to put away more per week?
2. My plan is to start buying things now like baby wipes, nappies, baby wash(the one i want to use is organic so it is more money), then by the time the baby is born we will have at least a year supply of all those things-well maybe not the nappies as the baby will grow. So living off one wage may not be such a hard hit? Do you think this is a good idea?
3. We will buy everything else for the baby while we are both still working, i am planning on working up till at least 8 months, as i work in an office. I would love to hear other parents experiences and how they planned things and what worked for them?
Sorry this is so long! All your input is much appriciated and thanked :-)

Good idea! Just don’t buy a lot of baby clothes, as they grow super fast!
And have a baby shower, you’ll get more goodies.

    sounds like a good plan.

you might want to reconsider stocking up on all that stuff unless you have tons of extra storage space.

i am a stay at home mom, and me quitting my job wasnt as hard as we thought it might be financially.

I’m not sure about the answers for all of your questions, but I just want to say that saving is a good idea, buying nappies, baby wipes, etc. is not… You never know – your baby can be allergic to a certain brand, or you may decide that it’s not the best fit for you and your baby once you start using it. Those things you can never judge until you actually use the stuff… so keep the money aside for this, but only buy the necessities for when the baby is born.

Sounds similar to what I did. I had pretty much everything I needed for a very good while for both of my kids. And I only started to buy when I found out I was pregnant. I didn’t get as much money saved up, but I had my family to help out too. Sounds like a good plan to me!! And good luck!! :)

OH! And don’t forgot to stock up on any coupons you get!! You can go straight to the most manufacturer websites to get stuff by snail mail. I got everything from baby bowls and spoons to bibs and bags. LOL :)

I can understand. Things are getting expensive and it usually hits most on baby/kids stuff at least that’s how I feel.
CLEARNCE/ SALES I found alot of great stuff that way. I got a gorgous crib bedding set for half off because no one was buying it.
Also baby showers. Make a list for your family and tell them what you are in need of.
Also don’t worry about all that fancy gadget stuff. Its not really a big deal. Your not going to be horrible parents if you dont get them all the latest stuff. But this is the choice you have to make. “I must say one thing though I feel is a need from gadgets” swing. It helped me with my three sooth them to sleep if they were fussy.
Also family/friends handme downs. I got some great knew clothes from my husbands side of the family that were new and not even used or even used but didnt even look it.

Also samples if you dont plan on breastfeeding they do give out formula samples that you can put in your stock for later.
