When to Start Shopping for Nursery Furniture Sets

When you first discover that you are pregnant, often excitement is the emotion that hits first of all. And if you’re one of those who wants desperately to start decorating the nursery at the first available opportunity, then the question arises – when should you start shopping for baby furniture?

There is no one-rule-fits-all answer to this question. Some couples choose to start their shopping early and will have the entire nursery set up and decorated, with sheets on the cot, by month six of the pregnancy. Others will wait until the last moment and rush out to buy the essentials just before the birth. Some even find that they are still shopping for items after the birth, if they end up having a premature baby or they find a need for an item they didn’t plan to buy before.

So the answer is – start your shopping whenever it suits you. Of course, it’s customary to wait until the three-month mark passes so the risk of miscarriage is dramatically reduced, but anytime in the remaining six months is a good time to shop.

Many couples decide to wait until after the 20-week scan so that the sex of the baby is confirmed. The advantage of this is that if you want a gender-specific theme, you can be sure you are going for the right one! Many of the prettiest nurseries fall into the gender-specific category – gorgeous heart and flower themes for girls, colourful and fun cars, animals or teddies for boys – so it’s worth waiting.

The other advantage of waiting is that you may end up being given large items by friends and family who want to contribute. Typically someone close will organise a baby shower a month or two before baby‘s arrival, and if you register with one of the bigger baby and nursery retailers you will usually find that most of the things you need will be provided. Grandparents especially can often be relied upon to finance one of the big items like the cot or dresser.

However if you’d really like to make an early start on the shopping, by all means do so. The major advantage of spreading your expenditure over a longer period is that you won’t feel the pinch so much. Also you can time your spending so that larger items are bought during sale periods so you are sure you’re getting the best price possible!
