The wipes are fine, but don’t really get into the nooks and crannies that a spray would. I would recommend a spray. While diluted bleach is great, the odor just hangs around the house for DAYS.

I usually put them through the dishwasher. For something with alot of parts I use a weak bleach solution of 1 tbsp bleach to a gallon of water. I wouldn’t use the clorox wipes, the residue they leave might not be safe.

If you have a dishwasher, it is the best and easiest way to disinfect any hard toys that do not take batteries, otherwise, I would use the clorox or lysol disinfecting wipes … just wipe down with a wet rag with just water afterwards.

anything new i get that can be sterilised (like small plastic pieces) I stick them in the sterilizer when I first get them – a dishwasher will sterilise too, or else I boil water and put them in that for 5 mins to do the same thing. I know I might be paranoid but hey, it gives me peace of mind! Afterthat I just wash them up like anything else if they fall or have been eaten for a day or two! Occasionally I’ll use dettol on surfaces or to clean off plastic mats/bath toys etc which is what we’ve always used dilluted to clean nursery equipment etc – it’s a antiseptic disinfectant but you can bathe in it – I wouldn’t use regular bleach even watered down but that’s just me. I’m not* sure if you can get that in America though but if not there’s bound to be something else.

I use white vinegar to clean most things these days. Check out this web page and do a google search for more ideas. http://ecochildsplay.com/2007/09/26/how-to-clean-toys-naturally/

    make a bleach/water solution
    & clean them in that.
if possible, they can just be soaked

    clorox anywhere spray is great!

  8. jaidensmommy says:

clorox spray (the anywhere hard surface spray) is good because it is diluted just enough so it doesn’t have the harsh bleach smell. what i do is spray the toys down let it sit, then wash it off and let it dry.

Bleach is actually not good to use…since it kills the healthy bacteria, too. It is a strong chemical….try something more natural. White Vinegar, Tea Trea, simple soap and HOT water also will do it. I try to clean more naturally because I know it is better for my baby. Do you know all the crap they put in those wipes? And you’re wiping it on his/her toys?

I have been a licensed child care provider in my home for 20 years. I have also overseen the toy cleaning procedures for our church’s nursery, toddler, and preschool rooms. For normal home use with toys that are played with mostly by just your own child, washing with soap and rinsing well is all it takes to keep toys clean. If other children visit your home and play with your child’s toys then you may want to disinfect, but if they aren’t sick it really isn’t necessary. For my daycare, I regularly wash most plastic toys in the top shelf of my dishwasher. Teething toys, rattles, and anything that has been in a baby’s mouth goes through the dishwasher if possible. Other things are washed in warm soapy water, rinsed well and placed in a bleach water solution using 1 Tablespoon of bleach per 1 gallon of water. Let the toys soak for about 5 minutes than let air dry overnight. Bleach evaporates and there is no danger of babies ingesting it when the bleach water is thoroughly and completely dry from the toy. You can use disinfecting wipes on large surface toys such as climbing toys, chairs, and ride-on toys. Or, you can use a spray bottle that has 1 quart of water with 1 tsp. bleach in it. Either way, just let the surface dry completely before letting the baby play with the item again. I suggest you wash everything you can in your dishwasher and for other items, washing in soap and water works fine. It won’t hurt to disinfect your baby’s toys, but it isn’t necessary with normal usage.

i use regular soap and water- dial soap- i work in a daycare- kids put anything in their mouths- so with the bleach and such- i’d be careful what you use- because your kid will put it in their mouth and could get really sick!

I use the clorox wipes once a week on everything for our son. I’ve asked his pedi and she reassured me that they were fine to use.

  13. mystic_eye_cda says:

Soap doesn’t need to disinfect it traps the microbes and washes them down the drain. At which point they are no longer of concern.

You can use bleach if you rinse them very well. However personally I would never put anything on my kids toys I wouldn’t use on my cups, plates, or cookware.

  14. Amberlori says:

Throw the toys in the dishwasher. If you will eat off the dishes that come out of your dishwasher, they are perfectly clean for your baby too.

It’s not necessary to use bleach or anti-bacterial cleaners on your kids toys. In fact, it might be detrimental as it doesn’t help them to build up those immunities to regular every day germs.

So, if you don’t have a dishwasher, just use regular dish soap and hot water and scrub them down with a scrubby and rinse them off well.
