Start the Learning Early with Educational Toys for Infants

Parents today are eagerly introducing learning at an early age because they understand the value of education, and its connection to success in all areas of life. Purchasing educational toys for infants is a popular choice for parents who wish to give their babies the added tools that will provide them with a head start.

Research has found that providing infants with the proper sensory stimulus at an early age can help prevent many learning difficulties down the road.  Providing your baby with the appropriate cognitive stimulation will not only protect against  potential learning problems, but can also help prepare them for the more challenging activities that they will face as pre-schoolers and beyond.

While your baby’s motor skills and mobility may be limited, he/she is in fact learning at an astonishing pace.  But, because their sensory skills aren’t fully developed, infants learn physically, through sight, sound, and touch and need toys that help develop those senses.

From a very young age, babies will respond to bright, contrasting colors and simple patterns. In addition, toys at this stage should be lightweight, easy to grasp, make gentle sounds and provide a variety of textures that the baby can feel.

As always, when selecting toys for a child of any age, be sure to follow the toy manufacturers guidelines for age and safety specifications.

Here are just a few suggestions;

Very young babies favor objects that move slowly and/or have a soothing sound.  Crib mobiles will mesmerize newborns; just make sure it’s within the baby’s range of vision. Babies find unbreakable crib mirrors fascinating, and will stare at their own reflections intently. From birth to six months of age, babies have very limited motor skills.  Teething rings, cloth books, rattles and soft blocks will stimulate and motivate babies in this age group. Babies between the ages of six and nine months are old enough to benefit from toys like stacking rings, building blocks and activity centers. Don’t be hesitant to introduce books at an early age.  Babies will focus on your voice as you read to them.  They also enjoy looking at faces, and will respond to books with bright pictures of people; other babies in particular.

Although interacting with parents and caregivers provides the best education during baby’s first few months, educational toys for infants can provide other forms of physical activity via sound, sight, and touch that will keep their little minds active, and help promote their healthy development.
