Do you make baby formula as needed?

Question by JiminyCricket: Do you make baby formula as needed?
I have always made my baby’s formula as needed but someone recently told me that I should make all the bottles for the day at the same time so that the “nutrients have time to activate” or something. I think that sounds TOTALLY STUPID and I’m wondering if anyone else has ever heard of such a thing. I think if it was true it would say so on the can! It can’t possibly be accurate !

I have never heard of that, just make the bottles up a few in advance, so you dont have to rush or panic that you need a bottle when the wee baba is squalling its lungs out for grub!!!

I make enough for 48 hours at a time, but it has nothing to do with nutrients. I have twins and its just easier for me to have it mixed already at feeding time.

ETA: Okay I’ve been thinking a bit about this and I’ve heard others mention that its best to make it up in advance so that the bubbles from mixing it have time to settle and it has less of a chance to give the baby gas. Maybe this is what your friend was thinking of…?

It’s totally inaccurate. Always make formula only as needed. It spoils way too quickly to be used any other way. This goes not only for human formula, but any kind of powdered formula mix that there is, and even real human milk. Breast milk won’t keep very long unless you freeze it, and maybe a little longer in the fridge. But with powdered mixes when you’ll always have it handy and don’t need to worry about whether or not someone else will be able to feed the child, there’s just no reason to wait.

agree with you.but some people do make it up ahead of time and keep it in the fridge and it is still good.

I made it as i needed it because it was more easier for me.

Its entierly YOUR choice. I used to do both if i was pushed for time id make the bottles for the day. Most of the time tho id just do them on my time( feeding them ever 6 hours) not when they got hungry.
I have 2 kids one 3 the other is now 1. Oldest was not given a routine and was hell, 2nd was a lot easier with routine.

It is stupid. The only plus to making bottles at the beginning of the day is for saving time.

I always made my bottles as needed. Less waste and my kids are all perfectly healthy.

  9. Alicia says:

Thats dumb. The nutrients dont need time to activate, they are already in the formula. I would just make it as needed, you can make a few ahead of time for the sake of convenience. That would be the only reason to do that. Be careful with that though, you dont want to make too many and end up wasting it.

  10. Ryan's mom says:

It is more for conveinence. My mom made up bottles for 24 hours. You should NEVER store formula or expressed breast milk for longer than that because there is a chance of bacteria getting inside the bottle and making baby sick.

I agree with you that it is TOTALLY STUPID. I have never heard of this nor have I ever done it.

  12. kjpierce08 says:

no i havent heard of that but i did make all my baby’s bottles for the day…it was so much easier than making them as i go…then i could just take one out of the fridge warm it up and be done.

I made mine up for the day all at once, but not for the reason you said. That really DOES sound stupid, lol! I did it because it was easier and more convenient. Especially for middle-of-the-night bottles. Instead of standing at the sink, half awake, squinting because I forgot my glasses, trying to measure out the powder in the light of the cooktop night light, I would just grab one out of the fridge and nuke it for 18 or 20 secs.

  14. Vanissa W says:

That sounds like junk just do whatever is easier for you you have to deal withthe baby not them

  15. busyliz says:

If I have to use the liquid formula I make the whole can up into a pitcher and put it in the fridge and use it as I need it. I as least have it mixed up to make the bottle easier. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with making it as needed.

  16. Robyn S says:

I have done both. If you are using the powder kind then as needed is easier. One of the formulas my son was one (he was one a total of 4 different kinds before they got it right) only cam in a concentrate, then I would make a can and fill the bottles for the day. It was just eiser then keeping the big container in the fridge. I think I got 6 4-6oz bottles to a can and it was eaiser to store the bottles then it was to jug I had to mix it in. so it really depends on what form you are using.

i’d just make the bottles only when u need to feed the baby

  18. Nicola says:

I have 2 children and i made up 24hrs worth of bottles each morning made sure it was cool then kept it in the fridge cause then if you wanna go out then they are all ready you dont want to risk having to run out some where and not having any bottles made up, it never did my kids any harm and ill do exactly the same with the child we are ttc. But if it aint used that day just throw it away.

  19. gonja_blossom says:

I usually just make one bottle at a time and make sure my baby eats it within a hour, if not i throw it away, because bacteria can grow on the milk within a hour. If i want to sometimes though i make some to last for about 48 hours and put them in the fridge, so the bacteria doesnt grow on them so fast(you have to use them before 48 hours though). When i take one out of the fridge i usually just warm it up and its ready to go.

  20. g_bug says:

I make bottles daily. I make enough for a 24 hours period because I find it easier…however…the nutrients activating…yeah that sounds stupid

  21. beerbohms says:

Making bottles ahead does save time. Just grab one out of the fridge and warm it up. That way, if your baby is hysterical you don’t have to try to juggle the baby and prepare a bottle at the same time. Just be sure to use any premade formula within 24 hours. After that, you should toss it out.

  22. ★☆ßĻŨĘ☆★™ says:

My son likes his room temperature(which is how they gave it to him in the hospital). So I just pre-measure the water, and when he seems hungry, I add the formula. Doesn’t take alot of time to add 2 scoops of formula and mix, and he doesn’t eat on a schedule, so I don’t waste any formula. But when I had my first son, he was on the concentrated liquid stuff, so I did make all of them in advance. But mostly because I was in school and my sister would stay with him, and it was alot easier on her.

  23. Kay says:

I have always made mine as needed and I have a very healthy 7 month old.

  24. funrdhdpeach says:

Sounds like a lame reason to me! However I do make up what I need for one day just because it is a little more convenient for me.

  25. sinned says:

My daughter used to make up one at a time for my grandson and now makes enough for 24 hours. Either way is fine and if you don’t believe me check out Good Start’s website.
The grandson has never had gastro and is happy and healthy.

  26. Cocheta says:

Read the instuctions on the formula. Most formulas are only good in the open for an hour or two once made, longer in the fridge. I make as needed.
