Question by 11456!!: Your thoughts on bath & care (use of baby toiletries) for new born please.?
Hello – Traditionally in our families, we will bathe the new born with a mild baby soap after giving him/her a gentle all natural oil massage first. But I have been reading in the sites that a new born needs to be only washed with plain water for the first 3 months. This will give baby’s skin time to develop and prevent the skin from drying out. So this is what I’ve been planning.
1. Bathe baby using just water alone for first 3 months.
2. Introduce a mild baby soap & a natural oil for massaging from 4th month onwards. But no soap on face until 6 months.
What do you think? Also I thought of going organic for toiletries but a friend told me that we shouldnt use organic on babies as their system has to develop adjusting to the environment around. So think I might go for Aveeno baby.
Would like to get your thoughts on what’s best for the baby.
Thanks!

In my family, we always bathe the babies with baby soap as soon as the umbilical stump falls off. We bathe them, and then give them a massage with baby oil or baby lotion (My daughter loves the lavender lotion!) It never dried their skin out or anything so you shouldn’t feel pressured into changing what your family has always done, unless it’s something you really want to do.

I used mild baby soap from the beginning, just a little. As for using organic, I think if it’s better for baby then, why not? Though I would be more concerned with finding a baby soap that is not made up of chemicals. I use baby products that are plant derived.

I used mild, all natural baby soap on both ofmy girls from birth. But until their umbilical cord fell off, we just sponge bath. I only bathed them about three times a week at that age. Now they are one and 3 and we bathe them every second or third day. I still use all natural bath products on them. Weleda and Earth to Body are my favourite. I really hate the idea of using conventional bath products on them, they are full of nasty, toxic chemicals (petroleum, parabens, pthalates, formaldehyde, etc.).
And I always massage them with an all-natural oil AFTER their bath (I like jojoba oil or Weleda baby oil without petroleum or other nasty chemicals).
