You, you are the learning toy.

Continue nursing, playing, talking, and interacting with your baby, no toy can even come close to that.

You are the best learning tooy your baby can have. Talk, smile, sing and cuddle with your baby and enjoy them while they are depending on you,

My son started using the activity gym around 2 months. He loves it. http://www.tinylove.com/toy.aspx?toyId=32
I think at that age, any kind of play or interaction is “learning.”

My son’s fav thing at that age was a playmat. I would get in the floor with him and play with all of the toys that dangled in front of him. Also, anything that plays music and lights up. At that age I got him this cheap little v-tech radio that plays 4 (really annoying after 6 months) songs and he still loves it. Songs and lights go a looong way. They don’t grow out of that for quite a while. As long as you are down in the floor or at his/her side playing, too, then they will, I think benefit greatly and learn more quickly. I felt that way with my son, anyways. Plus, it is great bonding time for us.Also, I say, now is a great time to start collecting books. We enrolled our son in a few scholastic book clubs so he will have a library when he is old enough to read. He has always loved sitting in our laps as we read Dr. Suess books- he loves the colors. When he/she gets a little older, I highly recommend the Fisher-price rainforest jumperoo. I got my son his at 5 months and could have gotten it a little earlier. He has become much more alert to sounds and lights, his legs are much stronger, and he has learned to twist his body around to move the chair. It is amazing to watch.

NONE–sensory skills for a baby of that age are not really developed–what they do react to is voices—they should make eye contact and smile when stimulated correctly. If you want to get toys for the future, go to a store specializing in toys for all ages–the inventory packaging will suggest applicable age ranges. Just handle the baby correctly and carefully–no loud noises—no improper handling that can result in neck damage–NEVER SHAKE a baby. The skull, neck and spine are not developed and permanent injury can occur. Just wash your hands before and after handling a baby. Never blow germs in the babies face—no need to blow on a baby at all. Crying is natural and can be for any number of reasons—hunger–dirty diaper, cold, hot, noise, colic, illness. The baby will respond to people who hold it properly and talk softly—they are naturally inquizative as time goes on. Buy a book on baby handling—it may be of some help. Lots of luck and love to everyone…happy new year

A colourful mobile hanging over him/her is great, but the best learning toy is your face, voice and touch.
