I’m getting ready to move into a new apartment. I cant afford to buy all kinds of new organic furniture and bedding. What are the most important/useful steps I can take to “green” and detoxify my new space. I’m especially concerned about my mattress, its ano old one my mom is donating from our attic. Oh, if it matters, our floors are hardwood with carpet only in the bedroom.

you need to get the book “Green Living” in there

“Green” living doesn’t have anything to do with buying all-new organic stuff; it’s about reducing your impact on the environment. One good way to do this is by re-using old stuff for new purposes and buying from thrift stores rather than just tossing all your old stuff in a landfill because it isn’t 100%-natural-organic-EPA-approved.
invest in a good mattress -use whatever sheets fit the bed & are clean.
it may sound icky, but i recently moved into a really nice apt, and i found all of my furnature and bathroom items (excluding towels) at yard sales, salvation army, and NEWSPAPERS!
my entire living room is newspaper buys, i have a extra long couch, very nice entertainment center, and a wingback chair as well as 2 stands and a DVD twirly thing, all under $100. all of the furnature is nice, pretty, and unbroken!
way to ‘recycle’!
By “green” this time of course I meant getting rid of toxins that I will be breathing. Thats one of the problems with the term right now, there are two many definitions.
I understand that buy from resale stores reduces waste in the landfills, however some things like mattresses especially, hold really disgusting things like dust mites, mold, mildew and other allergans that I would rather not lay on all night. They are also coated with harmful chemicals for fireproofing regulation standards. I was wondering if there were good ways to reduce the harmful effects of an old mattress like this without dumping it.
