Q&A: Best formula for breastfed babies?

Question by Sandy: Best formula for breastfed babies?
Alright, I tried looking up information on the best formula available in the market for breastfed babies and all I got was info on breastfeeding vs bottle feeding! I have a 2 week old baby girl who I’m breastfeeding currently… But for various reasons, it’s very hard for me to keep up with breastfeeding exclusively…So I plan to supplement her diet with formula. I need some advice as to which formula is best suited for a baby who’s mostly breastfed…I would like the formula to be easily digestible and not cause her any constipation or gas (She is pretty gassy already)
My baby wants to feed every hour for around 45 mins (specially in the night). I went totally sleepless for more than a week and went into PPD subesequently..That’s when my baby’s pediatrician asked me to feed the baby formula at least during the nights so that I dont have to wake up each time she wants to feed. I’m aware of the benefits breastfeeding and want to continue with it…
Yes! I’m using a slow flow nipple for her bottle and she seems to like it. Currently am using similac Alimentum recommended by the pediatrician-just wanted to know if there’s a formula that’s made to be supplemented with breast milk :)

My son uses Enfamil Gentlease. We’ve tried other formulas and this is the ONLY one that does not constipate him. Good Luck!
EDIT: I just wanted to say that I VERY EASILY breastfed and formual fed for 6 months! My son had no problem with switching back and forth. I would recommend the NUK brand bottles. They are specially formed to be most like mother’s breast and therefore easier to go back and forth! Good luck momma! Your are doing fine. And if you are having PPD I would ask a friend/ or family member to watch her during the day for an hour or 2 so you could catch up on some rest. ;)

All standard formulas are essentially the same. But different babies sometimes do better with one or another. So you’ll just to use good old trial and error. Start with a basic storebrand and go from there.

BUT — 2 weeks is FAR too early to be assuming that you can’t keep up with baby’s needs. Your milk supply is still becoming established, and she is still learning to nurse. Early supplementation and bottles are likely to make things much worse. Have you spoken with a lactation consultant? Does SHE agree that you need to be supplementing? If so, she’ll probably recommend a formula, and the best way to give it without causing further problems.

Before jumping into supplementation (which is very likely to result in complete weaning in fairly short order) please contact an LC and work on increasing your supply.

I breastfed, and was actually reading about one lady who gives her child powdered goats milk, and her pediatrician says thats fine. I know goats milk is much easier to digest than cows milk or formula based from cows milk, so that’s something I would look into! I’ve only given my son a couple bottled (I had surgery) and when I did I used Similac (i think “Good start” or something like that).

We use Gerber Good Start Gentle Plus. She digests it easily, very rarely does she ever spit up, and usually if she does it is because she drank too fast. I weaned her off the breast so she is now exclusively formula fed, but for 4 weeks she had both the breast and the formula and was fine.

i’m guessing that since breastmilk is all natural, then a cows milk based all natural formula would be the closests to breastmilk. Also i have read that the type of formula is not as important as how you are feeding the baby, as far as it being easier to digest, you should slowly introduce formula starting with about a half an ounce for each feeding and the rest breastmilk and then gradually replace one (breastmilk) meal with formula and then gradually replace two meals, or whatever you want to do. Keep in mind that some babies will not trasition to formula at all but since she is still just a couple weeks you probably won’t have any issues. I found a site on how to make your own baby formula, which i thought was pretty interesting.

and similac, earths best, parents choice, and babys only all make organic formula
i’ve also heard that goats milk works best for a lot of people

*edit* i was reading some of your other answers and there are nipples that work best for people who breastfeed partially or pump here are instructions on how to choose the best one
