Question by CURIOUS_ME: What is the best baby formula for a 4-day old baby?
I just had a baby on friday and I’m feeding him Similac Advance Infant Formula, but it’s giving the baby diarreha. What’s the best formula for my new-born baby?

Why don’t you breast feed him? There is no best formula by the way…

Breast is best. I only breast fed my daughter for the first six months. She is 2 now (29 months) and has not been sick yet. Honestly breastfeeding is a wonderful bonding experience. It’s a time when only you can provide for your child and it’s a wonderful feeling. It actually hurts more not to breast feed. I hated the feeling of having all that milk so I just started pumping and then i eventually breastfed her.
That’s what we started my daughter on but before we left the hospital I told them we needed to switch her to Similac Isomil Advance because she was spitting the other up a lot. Then her doctor switched her to Similac Alimentum because she has acid reflux. You should talk to the dotor and let them decide what kind works best. I know that with the formula my daughter is on now she has a lot looser diapers. But it’s also a newborn thing. They have diarreha like diapers. Well that’s what I’ve been told.
Breastfeeding is the best food, but if you choose not to breastfeed, there are many formulas on the market. I would check with your pediatrician if your baby has diarrehea and he is less than a week old. Keep in mind cost. Like Parents Choice from Walmart. It is WAY cheaper than Similac or Enfamil and it has all the ingredients it is supposed to. Formula is regulated by the FDA so it has to meet certain requirements.
That is up to your doctor. Some people have to go through so many different kinds to find the right kind.

But at the hospital he was on enfamil with iron which caused him to not use the bathroom so that is why he was taken off of that and put on the good start.

Try the same brand but Soy (the bottle is maroon colored). They also have an orange color that’s called Sensitive. Similac is a great brand, though, just try the two I mentioned. If that doesn’t work, the next best is Isomil (?) and Good Start third in line. Good luck! Oh, and screw people who tell you to breast feed. That’s your business. That s– really pisses me off when people try to tell you what to do with your body.
I always wanted to breast feed with all my children but couldn’t due to the fact I had to go to work. With the last I gave up work but he didn’t take the milk properly and I was pushed into giving formula. A decission I will always regret. If you can try breast feeding. I did it for six months with my second child and she seems much cleverer than the other two. I know not all babies will take to it and it takes a lot of perserverence and you need support. Babies do get dioreha when little mine did even on breast milk. Diareaha is better than constipation though my last baby suffered terribly with it. Its a hard time and you feel like you are getting no where especially when different people are giving you lots of different advice. Just do what YOU think is best. Dont listen to anyone else theyre not always right. Even the professionals!

or try the Orange can

keep the Similac Advanced plus Iron for when the baby stops pooping for two days at a time and then give him an 8 oz of that as a laxative
use Playtex Drop In bottles with Parents Choice liners and do NOT buy Soy products for a baby

I use Nestle with comfort protiens. Its pretty good. It doesn’t seem to cause constipation or diareah in my daughter. I do breastfeed primarily though and only supplement with formula. My daughter refuses to drink Similac.
Don’t listen to all these jerks that try to make you feel bad for not breastfeeding. You have your reasons, I’m sure you agonized about your decision, and they need to just mind their own business.
Talk to your doctor about the formula though. He/She will be able to give you the best advice.
Ya that’s what the hospital gives and my daughter had probs w/it..I went to good start and she did better on the purple can..the orange can caused constipation.
I like how you ask about what kind of formula and some have to give opinions on breastfeeding when you didn’t even mention it. If they can’t answer the question properly then they need not to answer.
first of all, to all of you jerks saying “just breastfeed”… what the HECK is your problem?! Why is it any of your business if she breastfeeds or not?! She has her own reasons for not breastfeeding– for all you know, she might be going through chemo and can’t, or her baby might’ve been allergic to her milk (this CAN happen, but it’s rare), or she might not be able to produce milk (again, it’s rare, but it can happen), or maybe she was sexually abused or raped once and breastfeeding would’ve brought back those painful memories. You don’t know her situation, so quite being so freaking judgemental. Oh and by the WAY, she didn’t ask “What is the BEST thing to feed a baby?” she asked what the best FORMULA is.
To find out what FORMULA is the best for your baby, I suggest you talk to your pediatrician. Different babies react differently to certain formulas, so what’s best for one baby might not be the best for yours. You might have to look around a little bit to find the FORMULA that is the most suitable for your baby.
What some of these people aren’t realizing is that not all babies will breastfeed.My son didn’t take to it very well so at 2 weeks I switched him to Nestle good start formula and it’s been great for him,he doesn’t spit up as much and he doesn’t get constipated from the iron.It is kinda pricey,because there is no equivalent generic to it.But I love that formula!
And as for breastfed babies having higher IQ’s,well that’s not always true.In school I had a great grades and won a lot of essay contests and I was NEVER breastfed.
