Is it a good idea to buy diapers on sale before baby comes?

Question by Texas girl- R’s wife and K’s mommy!: Is it a good idea to buy diapers on sale before baby comes?
I didn’t know if that was a good thing to do or not. I know diapers can be expensive, so I thought I might start buying the on sale sometimes. But I was wondering if I should or not, because I know some newborns don’t actually fit into the newborn size or whatever. So, what do you think? Also, what do you think is the best brand to buy? I do most of my shopping at Target.
Thanks!

YES BUY NOW!! LOL
we made the mistake of not buying any because i did not know that you can return them to the store and exchange them for bigger sizes! now knowing that, for our next one we will stock up before time! idk about target, but walmart let us exchange. you can just buy a range of sizes but we used alot of newborn sized diapers. at first we used the pampers, but now stick with huggies. they just contour better to my son’s body better than pampers does. congrats and good luck!

What do you think? Answer below!

Yes, its a good idea. Buying them on sale and using coupons at the same time is a good idea, too. And if you end up with an extra package of diapers you didn’t need, I’m pretty sure (I think I did it once…) Target would let you exchange for the next size (as long as the package is unopened). My son fit into newborn size until he wieghed about 9.5 lbs, so newborn sizes usually fit a couple of weeks.
As far as brand goes, I actually like Targets brand of diapers. Store brands have come a long way. Best of luck!

I used to use Huggies untill I found out that Targets brand diapers called Up and Up work just as well. And diapers are always on sale somewhere, so there is no need to diaper crazy just yet. Buy a few packs, then wait till the baby is born and you need them.

People say YEAH! but seriously I wouldn’t, we got given a few boxes of Huggies and a Few boxes of Pampers. All but 5 of the huggies never got used because they leaked everywhere.

I would by a few packs of different types, and see which works best for your baby. Don’t waste your money on diapers that you may not be able to use with your LO.

Yeah, diapers don’t expire so buy buy buy!

If you can stock up now then why not. You may want to hold off on buying newborn diapers as your baby may be too big to use them (speaking from personal experience as my babies were over 10 lbs). Buy bigger sizes such as size 1 or 2 as you will be using those sizes for a few months so you should have no problem using them up.

As for brands, it really is a personal preference. I loved Pampers for the first few months (loved the smell) however moved to the Costco brand for the larger sizes as they were more inexpensive by buying in bulk (some say that the Kirkland brand is actually Huggies Supreme however that is hearsay). I tried using Coscto’s brand for newborn but didn’t like them for the early stage and just went with Pampers. HTH

Sure you can, but do not open the box until you need them. If diapers are still in the package, they can be returned/exchanged.
I used Pampers Swaddlers until my boys outgrew them. I’ve heard that they changed the make of the diapers, though. Now we use Member’s Mark from Sam’s Club. They’re soft like the Pampers and work very well! Here, they are $32 for a box of 200.

Yes it is a good idea to buy them on sale. But yes you are right that newborns may not actually fit the newborn size. Or if they are like my son, he grew out of them fast. If your store is having a sale and you have extra room at your house or closet to store them buy a few different sizes (like a pack of newborns, 1′s, 2′s, etc.) because your baby will grow into them eventually. My son is 15 months old and wears a size 4 diaper but the store had size 5′s on sale. I bought a huge box of 5′s because I know he’ll be wearing them soon. Oh, and as far as brands go, you may have to try a few different kinds before you find the right kind that works best for your baby. Personally, we use Pampers, but I’ve tried several kinds (just bought small packs) and Papmers just seemed to work best for my little guy.

I like Parent’s Choice, but use whatever brand you feel. You’ll probably change brands a few times anyways.
If you have the extra money now, go ahead and buy diapers. Don’t buy a whole lot of newborns, they won’t be in them long. Stage 2 and 3 will be the best to buy. If you have a baby shower, everyone will get you newborn anyways. I go through a box and a half a month, but I only have my baby half of the time (his dad has him when I’m at work). So I figure you’ll need three boxes a month if you always have your baby and a box usually has around 96-100 diapers. Going through 10 diapers a day is probably considered a good day. Usually I after I change him I hear some rumbling and got to change him again.
Good luck and enjoy being a mom!

No, in fact it is a good idea to buy beforehand with this economy you never know what comes in the future. Prices might rise. I actually did with my two boys. Pampers is the best brand and good for your baby’s skin, also very absorbent. You might find even more sales at Wal-Mart. Use coupons you can find them online. Also, in your baby shower, it will be a good idea if you let people know you would appreciate diapers in bigger numbers and not newborn, since baby grow too fast. People sell diapers for a cheaper price on Craigslist, now be careful when meeting strangers. and… Good Luck!

You might want to consider cloth diapers. They are NOT all pins and plastic pants anymore, they do NOT have to be dunked in the toilet and they do NOT have to be bleached or boiled. They are super cute and some work just like disposables with “velcro” or snap attachments. You can get “one-size” cloth diapers in several forms so you can buy ONCE and it will last through more than one child! Here’s a link to a picture of what cloth diapers look like now: http://www.thanksmama.com/All_in_One_Cloth_Diapers_s/87.htm Don’t let the prices shock you–remember that you get MANY wears out of each diaper. You can spend $3,000 and up on disposables for just one child OR a couple of hundred of cloth diapers & supplies and it will last for many children. You can save even more if you sew your own (I did), but so many moms sew them in their homes to sell that unless you love to sew, there is no need. Please at least look at the selection and consider it. There are environmental and health benefits, as well!

I think its a brilliant idea. You can never be too prepared and you can always return them and get a store credit and you can buy something else you need.

buy them now anything you can find on sale for the baby now will help. You can always exchange them for bigger sizes if you need too…

I actually heard that the Target brands are the best ones! They are also the cheapest! The ONLY reason I would tell you to hold off on storing up diapers, is if you have a baby shower, you might get an overload of diapers anyway! But its always good to keep your eye out for things on sale and to store up on them now! Maybe you can buy diapers from 3-6 or 6-9 months, since you’ll probably get mostly 0-3 at your baby shower!

    Hello Texas Girl,

from my experience with 2 putzis, I can say that it’s always best to stock up just a bit in advance. You are right, supplies are so expensive these days. Anyways, I came across a promotion offer of free diapers for a whole year! it involves a survey of some kind but it is not a drawing or anything like that. You should check it out. About the baby’s size, I am quite sure that any store will gladly exchange any closed package for another size, what do they care. And lastly, I love Huggie’s, don’t ask me why, they just seem so comfortable and durable and I know that they do a graet job keeping whatever has to stay inside… inside.

So, I wish you great health, happiness and easy delivery,
    Maria.
