    My boys were around 3 or 3 1/2 months when I started rice cereal and then about a month later gradually started fruits and vegetables. I don’t believe we should ask our doctors about everything to do with our children. We know our children best. It depends on how the child is doing. If your child makes the motions of eating when you do and seems to want to eat, then I would give it a try. Start with fairly thin rice cereal mixed with breast milk or formula.

    If you are breastfeeding, you wait longer than the suggested 6 months. If your baby is bottle fed, then 6 months. Waiting until atleast 6 months allows your baby’s digestive system to develop.

    according to everything I have read recently you can start as early as 4 months but it is recommended to wait until 6 months. I would talk with your pediatrician about what to start with as some thoughts have changed on that.

    The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):

    * World Health Organization
    * UNICEF
    * US Department of Health & Human Services
    * American Academy of Pediatrics
    * American Academy of Family Physicians
    * American Dietetic Association
    * Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
    * Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
    * Health Canada
    You can start trying solids at 6 mos, but if baby doesn’t show any interest, you can always delay them. 6 months is the MINIMAL age to start solids.

    Why delay solids?
