You can always start buying diapers, wipes, toys, pacifiers, bibs, etc. There are PLENTY of items you can get without knowing the gender, basically everything but clothing.
plenty of things
toiletries – bathwash, wipes, nappies, nappy rash cream etc
towels
singlets – about a dozen of each size
rompers (just get neutral colours/patterns) but you will need lots of them in various sizes – about 6-7 of each size depending on weather in your area too
blankets (can never have too many)
you need to factor in that children will need something to sleep in, something to wear during the day and change of day clothes 2-3 times a day due to vomit/nappy leakage/weather this includes singlet/clothes and blankets
if you start with these items you will be well on your way remember that when you have a baby shower you will get more and when the baby is born more will be brought especially gender specific clothes.
Car seat, onesies (about a dozen), receiving blankets (5 or 6), crib/basinette/cradle, nursing bras (you should get at least 2) if you’re going to nurse, vaseline (keeps baby’s poop from sticking… VERY useful), diapers and wipes (1 pack of newborn diapers, and a couple BIG packs of size 1).
If you are not going to find out what you are having, it is hard to buy for. We did it with both children, but finding neutral / unisex clothing or nursery items are not easy. Things that you need plenty of are socks, bodysuits (onesies), receiving blankets, and sleepers. Babies are messy, so you can go through 2-3 outfits a day. I would suggest 7-8 onesies, 3-4 sleepers, and at least 5 pairs of socks. You will get more as gifts, but this might be where you need to start. Don’t get too much of one size though. They grow quickly! Congrats and good luck.
Babies when born everyone says they will fit into 000, but most babies up to 8 and a half lb or 4kg will fit into 0000, or preemie size (which is actually 00000) so you will need a few items of clothing in that size, but don’t buy much in 0000. I bought some basics in neutral colours and made it enough that I didn’t have to rush out when bubs was born to quickly buy things for them to wear. But singlets, bodysuits (are a good alternative to singlets) and all in ones (rompers), depending on the weather, receiving blankets, in polar fleece, or muslin. You mighten need bibs yet but you could buy a few. Hats and mittens if it is cold or getting cold. Car seat of some kind, pram, cot or bassinet. After Bubs is born and you feel like an outing you could try to go shopping for clothes for them, but they do grow fairly quickly so I wouldn’t buy too much. And you may get clothing from people as gifts after the baby is born in an appropriate colour for the sex of the baby.
Tons of newborn diapers. I love pampers swaddlers. Tons of wipees. I got a wipee warmer and I love it. I also got a diaper genie which helps a lot with the smell. If you get one you will need a ton of refills. You can get unie colored clothes, solid white onsies. A play mat with the bars that hang over. A swing. A vibrating seat. Diaper rash cream. Bottles (even if you are going to breast feed you should have a few bottles for when you need to leave the baby with someone else or so Daddy can feed the baby every now and then). A breast pump, breast pads, breast milk storage bags, etc.
There is a ton of stuff you can get….
